Some of you have received some excellent advice and websites to go to from your E-Tutors. Please take 5 minutes refer to your E-Tutoring printouts attached to your essays and share them with all of us. I will then use this list to compile a PowerPoint that you can access from the shared files folder. Please mention what the E-Tutoring link focuses on and then include the address of the link. If the tutor gave some explanation or examples that you found helpful, please included them as well. Please double check the link and click on it to make sure that it is an active email address.
For example:
Passive Voice versus Active Voice in Writing
In writing, you need to avoid using the passive voice and use the active voice. The active voice will make your writing more interesting.•http://www.unc.edu/dept/wcweb/handouts/passivevoice/html •http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl.resources/539/1
Do not just copy from your E-Tutoring. We do not want to know comments specific to your essay, but to writing in general.
Thank you for contributing to everyone's learning.

First, even a narrative should have a thesis sentence. Usually a personal narrative has an underlying message that the event represents. Here is a description that I have copied and pasted from the following web site: http://papyr.com/hypertextbooks/comp1/narrativ.htm

I have marked in the text where you have a fragment. A fragment is an incomplete sentence. Fragments most commonly are missing a subject, verb, or both. Often, a fragment can be corrected by connecting it to the sentence that comes before it. Sometimes it can be eliminated by adding or subtracting a word in the beginning of it. Sentences that start with although, and, but, because, so, therefore or then are often fragments, as are sentences that start with -ing words. Making sure to always start a sentence with a subject and an active verb (not an -ing verb) will help to eliminate fragments.
ReplyDeletei.e. - Fragment: Down the road a piece.
Complete Sentence: My childhood home is down the road a piece.
I hope this helps you understand fragments. Check out the link and you'll get some additional pointers: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/grammar/g_frag.html]]

A run on sentence that has two or more complete sentences in it that are either not separated by any punctuation at all or are separated by a comma. "I am going to the store I need to get groceries." is a run-on. So is "I am going to the store, I need to get groceries." I am going to the store and I need to get groceries could each be complete sentences; they are independent clauses. There are three ways to correct run-ons:
ReplyDelete* Seperate them into distinct sentences (I am going to the store. I need to buy groceries.)
* Join them with a semi-colon (I am going to the store; I need to buy groceries)
* Punctuate them with a comma coupled with a conjunction such as and, or, but, so, because, etc. (I am going to the store, because I need to get groceries.)

Here is a link with practice exercises
I think your conclusion is nice the way it is, but you may consider taking my suggestion at the end. Also, I think you make a good point about your comma usage. There are instances when using a comma would be helpful. I was always told to read my writing aloud. Whenever I made a natural pause, I was told to add a comma. This comes with practice. Try reading the bolded sentence aloud. Does this technique work for you? There are many places where you can add a comma. My suggestion is to read the main areas in the following link:

Folks, put the grammar or writing tip, not the tutors exact words specific to your essay. Make statements about writing and grammar, not about your specific essay. For instance, do not put comments like the following: "I think your conclusion is nice". Only put comments that will help students.
